The Government of Manitoba Invests $2 Million in the Minago Critical Minerals Project

Toronto, Ontario - Minago Development GP inc. (Minago) is pleased to announce that it has received a $2 million dollar investment from the Government of Manitoba which will support the next phase to develop a first-of-its-kind, low-emission magnesium processing facility in Canada. Minago is owned by Norway House Cree Nation (NHCN) and is the first 100% Indigenous owned critical mineral project in Canada.

In his announcement speech Mines Minister Jamie Moses said, “This is a first of its kind project in Canadian history. It is a mine that is fully owned by a first nation that is developing a nation changing project. It is so much more than just a mine. It is an incredible opportunity for Manitoba and for Canada. And the fact that we can do it in partnership with a first nation sets us on the precipice of a new way of doing business here in Canada.

I was flabbergasted by the fact that the magnesium and platinum group metals allows them to unlock even more nickel resource which are essential for EVs, advanced manufacturing and aerospace. The need for magnesium is real. We also know that China has a corner on that market. We now have a real opportunity to be national and international leaders and that starts with us working hand in hand with the Minago group that is fully indigenous owned.”

This next phase is expected to generate economic benefits for the people living in the region by creating more than 20 permanent jobs and provide training for over 50 First Nation participants. This project will strengthen Manitoba’s processing capacity using clean technology and advanced manufacturing, while remaining focused on protecting the land, water and air.

Minago appreciates the Government of Manitoba’s investment in facilitating this historic project which demonstrates that the Manitoba government fully supports the work of the Minago Critical Minerals Project making it a key player in the critical minerals strategy outlined by the Government of Canada.

Manitoba has the critical minerals the world is looking for, and Minago is focused on turning that advantage into real projects, real jobs and long-term growth. This investment strengthens Manitoba’s mining sector, supports Indigenous-led development, and sends a clear signal that the province is ready for responsible investment.
