Manitoba Government Pitches Major Northern Mining Opportunities at Canada Investment Summit 2026

The Manitoba government is showcasing a series of mining and northern infrastructure opportunities, as part of its investment package for the Canada Investment Summit, aimed at attracting investment, creating good jobs and strengthening economic development in northern, remote and Indigenous communities, Business, Mining, Trade and Job Creation Minister Jamie Moses announced today.

"Manitoba has the critical minerals the world needs as new technologies emerge and industries grow," said Moses. "Our province is uniquely positioned to become a global leader in the mining sector, supported by abundant natural resources, strong Indigenous partnerships and strategic infrastructure that can help connect Manitoba products to global markets. Projects like the Port of Churchill Plus will play an important role in getting Manitoba minerals to new customers around the world."

The opportunities being highlighted at the summit represent a range of advanced mining, exploration and infrastructure projects that build on Manitoba's strengths in critical minerals, precious metals and northern transportation networks.

Featured projects at the summit include:

  • Minago Critical Minerals Project: Canada's first 100 per cent First Nation-owned critical minerals asset. Recovery testing has achieved 91 to 94 per cent magnesium recovery from the Minago deposit, producing 99.9 per cent pure magnesium metal and positioning Manitoba as a potential supplier of a key input for advanced manufacturing and emerging technologies.

  • Thompson Nickel Belt: One of Canada's most significant mining districts and the world's fifth-largest nickel sulphide camp by contained nickel. Existing infrastructure includes a two-million-tonne-per-year mill and a tailings facility with approximately 20 years of remaining capacity.

  • Sherridon Project: An advanced copper-zinc-gold-silver volcanogenic massive sulphide district in north-central Manitoba with a long production history. The project is linked by an all-weather 78 km road and operating rail line to Flin Flon.

  • Little Stull Lake Project: A 38,335-hectare gold exploration project in northeastern Manitoba featuring five drill-confirmed gold zones and a fully established drill-ready camp. Historical exploration indicates the potential for 750,000 tonnes grading 10.5 grams per tonne gold.

  • Monument Bay Project: A district-scale gold and tungsten asset in northeastern Manitoba with more than 233,000 metres of drilling across more than 800 holes. ONGold Resources Ltd. is advancing the project toward technical studies.

  • Tartan Mine Project: A past-producing underground gold mine in the Flin Flon Greenstone Belt being advanced by McEwen Mining following its acquisition in 2026. The project has the potential to produce between 40,000 and 65,000 gold-equivalent ounces annually over a seven- to 10-year mine life.

  • Puffy Lake Mine Project: A past-producing high-grade gold mine in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake Belt with significant existing infrastructure and redevelopment potential.

  • Fay Lake Project: Located northeast of Flin Flon, the project hosts high-grade historical gold and copper mineralization and benefits from established regional infrastructure.

In addition to mining opportunities, the Manitoba government is highlighting the Northern Indigenous Integrated Air Logistics Hub at Thompson Airport as a strategic infrastructure investment opportunity.

The proposed $125-million project would establish a modern air cargo and logistics facility at northern Manitoba's primary multimodal transportation hub, which is served by year-round road, rail and air connections. The facility would help strengthen northern supply chains, improve food security, support major resource and infrastructure developments and enhance Canada's northern sovereignty.

Together, these projects have the potential to attract new investment, create good jobs, strengthen northern and Indigenous communities, and support Manitoba's long-term economic growth, the minister noted.
